Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Latin Musicae Doctor.
Etymology: Shortened (originally as graphic abbreviation) < post-classical Latin Musicae Doctor doctor of music (compare Doctor in Musica (1636)) < classical Latin mūsicae , genitive of mūsica music n. + doctor (see doctor n.). Compare slightly earlier Mus. Doc. n.
The degree of Doctor of Music; a person holding this degree. Also used as a title placed after a person's name. Cf. Mus.B. n.
