Origin: A borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French musculosité ; musculous adj., musculose adj., -ity suffix.
Etymology: < Middle French, French musculosité a fleshy part of a plant (1562 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny: compare quot. 1601 at sense 1), the quality of being muscular (Cotgrave, 1611; subsequently from 19th cent.) < classical Latin mūsculōsus musculous adj. + French -ité -ity suffix (compare -osity suffix). In sense 2 perhaps independently < musculous adj. or musculose adj. + -ity suffix (compare -osity suffix).
Botany. Obsolete.
