Etymology: < French musculine (C. Robin and F. Verdeil Traité de chimie anat. et physiologique (1853) III. lxxxv. 361) < classical Latin mūsculus muscle n. + French -ine -ine suffix5. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mɒ·skiulin) /ˈmʌskjuːlɪn/.
Biochemistry. Obsolete.
A proteinaceous substance formerly regarded as the chief chemical constituent of muscle.Identical with muscle fibrin or syntonin; it probably consists of actomyosin in some form.

1857 R. Dunglison Med. Lexicon (rev. ed.) 392/1 Muscular fibrin, Syntonin, Musculin, has been shown, however, to be different from that of the blood.
