mycetesn.2

Brit. /mʌɪˈsiːtiːz/, /ˈmʌɪsiːts/, U.S. /maɪˈsidiz/, /ˈmaɪˌsits/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mycetes.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Mycetes (in K. P. J. Sprengel Systema Vegetabilium (ed. 16, 1827) IV. 376) < ancient Greek μύκητες , plural of μύκης mushroom, fungus (see myceto- comb. form). Compare scientific Latin -mycetes, used in group names in fungal classifications (along with -myci) from 1817 or earlier, e.g. in Coniomycetes, Hyphomycetes, Pyrenomycetes; corresponding German plural forms in -myceten were in use from 1860 or earlier. In quot. 1874 after German Myceten, plural noun (1874 in the source translated; now Myzeten ). The scientific Latin singular Myces appears as a genus name in 1808. The disyllabic pronunciation reflects a reinterpretation of the word as the plural of mycete n.
Biology. rare.

Cf. mycete n.Bacteria were formerly classified as fungi, under the name Schizomycetes, and members of the bacterial group Actinomycetes are still sometimes treated as fungi in non-specialist contexts.
