单词 mycenaean
释义

Mycenaeann.adj.

Brit. /ˌmʌɪsᵻˈniːən/, /mʌɪˈsiːnɪən/, U.S. /ˌmaɪsəˈniən/, /maɪˈsiniən/
Forms: late Middle English Micenyen, 1500s Micenian, 1600s 1800s– Mycenean, 1600s– Mycenian, 1700s– Mycenaean.
Origin: Partly from a proper name, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Mycenae , -ian suffix; Greek Μυκηναῖος , Latin Mycēnaeus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Mycenae (ancient Greek Μυκήνη (singular), Μυκήναι (plural); classical Latin Mycēnē (singular), Mycēnae (plural)), an ancient Greek city in the Argive plain (in Homer ruled by Agamemnon) + -ian suffix (compare -ean suffix). In later use apparently re-formed < ancient Greek Μυκηναῖος (adjective) or classical Latin Mycēnaeus (adjective) + -an suffix. Compare Middle French, French mycenien (1574 or earlier, in sense A. 1), mycénien (1840 in sense B.), Italian miceneo (a1851 in sense B.). Compare also German mykenisch (1850 or earlier, in sense B.).The first attested use of the word in connection with the language of the Linear B tablets, after this had been identified as a Greek dialect (see sense A. 2), is as an adjective in Experimental Mycenaean Vocabulary by M. Ventris, privately circulated in July 1952 (see M. Lejeune Études mycéniennes (1956) 18). N.E.D. (1908) gives only the pronunciation (məisĭnī·ăn) /maɪsɪˈniːən/.

B. adj.
Of, relating to, or associated with Mycenae, esp. with reference to its position as a centre of civilization in the late Bronze Age, reaching its height in the 13th cent. b.c., and as a royal capital of archaeological importance. The word and its cognates in other European languages originally referred exclusively to inhabitants of or things associated with the city of Mycenae. After Heinrich Schliemann's rich archaeological finds at the site, beginning in 1876, it came to be used to designate Bronze Age culture in Greece and the Aegean generally, but was subsequently restricted in scholarly use to the late Bronze Age of mainland Greece.
