Of Christians, their faith, way of life, etc.: concerned with or devoted to good works and social issues, as opposed to asceticism; (more generally) setting store by the moral benefits of physical exercise; energetic and outgoing. Esp. in muscular Christian, muscular Christianity.Popularly associated with the ideal of robust religious character and Christian life supposedly expressed in the writings of Charles Kingsley, though the term is not his (see quot. 18583).
