Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Muscites.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Muscites (A. Brongniart Hist. des végétaux fossiles (1828) 93) < classical Latin muscus moss n.1 + -ītēs -ite suffix1. N.E.D. (1908) lists the word in a singular form muscite, with pronunciation (mɒ·sˌsəit) /ˈmʌssaɪt/, but this form is not attested in actual use.
Palaeontology.
A genus of fossil mosses originally comprising all fossil mosses found in amber, coal, or other deposits, and now used as a form genus for those which cannot be further classified.
