Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Muscicapinae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Muscicapinae, subfamily name (C. L. Bonaparte Saggio d'una distribuzione metodica degli animali vertebrati (1831) 31) < Muscicapa , genus name (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 12, 1766) 119, after earlier use in M. Catesby Nat. Hist. Carolina (1731) I. 52; < classical Latin musca fly (see Musca n.) + capere to catch: see capture n.) + -inae -inae suffix; compare -ine suffix1. N.E.D. (1908) gives only the pronunciation (mɒsi·kăpin) /mʌˈsɪkəpɪn/.
Zoology.
Of, belonging to, or designating the subfamily Muscicapinae (family Muscicapidae) or genus Muscicapa of Old World flycatchers.This term may be used of the group comprising all Old World flycatchers when the family Muscicapidae is defined in a more inclusive sense: see note s.v. muscicapid n.
