Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French muscatel.
Etymology: < Middle French muscatel (16th cent. in senses 1 and 2) < muscat muscat n. + -el -el suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin vinum muscatellum (1336), Middle High German mūscātel , and also Italian moscatello moscatello n. Compare earlier muscadel n.It is uncertain whether the following shows an isolated borrowing of a post-classical Latin derivative of the same word (compare -ine suffix1, -ine suffix4; compare muscatelline adj., muscadine n.1), or an unrelated derivative of post-classical Latin muscata nutmeg (see nux moschata n.):?c1425 tr.
