Origin: Probably a borrowing from Gbe. Etymon: Gbe Anagó.
Etymology: Probably < Gbe Anagó a Yoruba (perhaps also in form *Nagó; initial vowels are often dropped in Gbe) < Yoruba Ànàgó a Yoruba from Abeokuta Province, Nigeria. Compare Krio nagó, Brazilian Portuguese nagó, Cuban Spanish anagó, French nago (early 18th cent.), all in sense ‘a person of Yoruba origin’, and the following:1958 R. C. Abraham Yoruba–Eng. Dict. 55/1 In Ìpókìyà (Ìláàró Division of Abẹ́òkúta Province) live the Ànàgó type of Yorùbá.Compare also West African French (Benin, Togo, Ivory Coast) anago, nago, nagot (pejorative) shopkeeper, pedlar. A member of a Yoruba people inhabiting the coastal areas of modern-day Nigeria and Benin; spec. a member of this people taken to the Caribbean or South America as a slave; a descendant of such a person.In the Caribbean and South America, the term appears to have been used with little discrimination to refer to any person of Yoruba origin.
