Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Afrikaans. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Afrikaans nagmaal; Dutch nachtmaal.
Etymology: < Afrikaans nagmaal and its etymon South African Dutch nachtmaal < nacht (see night n.) + maal (see meal n.2). Compare German Abendmahl (15th cent.; compare Abend : see even n.1), Dutch avondmaal (16th cent. or earlier; compare avond : see even n.1), both in specific sense ‘Communion’.
