Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu naqqāra.
Etymology: < Urdu naqqāra (also in colloquial pronunciation naqāra , nagāra ) < Persian naqqāra and its etymon Arabic naqqāra (small) drum (with hemispherical base) (see naker n.1). Quot. 1970 probably reflects Bengali, Marathi, etc. nāgarā (probably altered by folk etymology; compare mahānāgarā large kettledrum). Compare naquaire n.Many similar instruments, with names derived from the same source, are used across a wide region from North Africa to central Asia; compare, for example, Turkish nakkare, Armenian naghara, etc.
In South Asia: a bowl-shaped drum, typically played with a stick, often as one of a pair and frequently in military or ceremonial contexts; a kettledrum. Cf. naker n.1The size and the material from which the drum is made varies regionally.
