Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French nacelle.
Etymology: < Middle French, French nacelle rowing boat (c1050 in Old French as nacele ), the basket of a balloon or airship (1783), the streamlined structure on an aircraft for housing an engine (1929 or earlier) < post-classical Latin navicella , naucella small boat (after 217) < classical Latin nāvis ship (see nave n.2) + -cella , diminutive suffix (see -ella suffix). Compare Anglo-Norman naucele, naucle small boat, post-classical Latin nacella small boat (13th cent. in British sources).
