单词 nabs
释义

nabsn.

Brit. /nabz/, U.S. /næbz/
Forms: 1700s (1900s– English regional) nabbs, 1800s– knabs, 1800s– nabs. Also with capital initial.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps related to nob n.2 (compare α. forms at that entry). Compare later nibs n.
colloquial and humorous.
Only with possessive adjective, as his nabs, etc.: a self-important or superior person; (in weakened sense) a person. Now rare except in my nabs n. myself; (also) the person whom one has previously mentioned; (in quot. 19391) one's superior. Also with plural agreement. Cf. nibs n.Quot. 1790 leaves the construction unclear; it is possible that use without possessive adjective is intended.
