单词 muscadin
释义

muscadinn.

Brit. /ˈmʊskədã/, U.S. /ˈməskəd(ə)n/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French muscadin.
Etymology: < French muscadin (in use in Lyons c1792–3, although compare quot. 1795 which suggests earlier use; 1747 as proper name of a fictional dandy), specific sense development of muscadin muscadine n.2 (perhaps after use of the French word's etymon Italian moscardino in sense ‘a dandy’ (16th cent.)).Never fully naturalized in English.
Now archaic and historical.
Esp. in Paris in the 18th and 19th centuries: a dandy, a fop. Hence depreciatively: a member of a Moderate party (composed chiefly of young men of the upper middle class) in the early years of the French Revolution (c1794–6).
