Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mysterialis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mysterialis mysterious, of hidden meaning (perhaps 5th cent., translating ancient Greek μυστικός mystic adj.; compare earlier mysterialiter , adverb: see mysterially adv.) < classical Latin mystērium mystery n.1 + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Old French, Middle French misterial (c1190 in Old French; also attested in Old French with the sense ‘holy’ (1284)).
Now rare.
Mysterious. In early use: †mystical (obsolete).
