Etymology: < Byzantine Greek μυσταγωγικός (c350 in the title of Cyril of Jerusalem's μυσταγωγικαὶ κατηχήσεις , the work referred to in most of the English quots.) < Hellenistic Greek μυσταγωγός mystagogue n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare classical Latin mystagōgica (neuter plural), title of a work by Cincius (1st cent. b.c.), mentioned in a 2nd-cent. epitome of a 1st-cent. grammarian. Compare slightly earlier mystagogical adj., and French mystagogique (1687 in cathecheses mystagogiques).

= mystagogical adj.Frequently used with reference to St Cyril of Jerusalem's μυσταγωγικαὶ κατηχήσεις (see etymology), a set of five catechisms designed to complete the initiation of baptized Christians between Easter and Pentecost.
