Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymons: French mormeler, murmillier.
Etymology: Probably < Old French mormeler, Old French (Picardy) murmillier to murmur (13th cent.) < a Germanic form cognate with Old High German murmulōn (see murmur v.); compare also Middle High German, German murmeln . Compare slightly earlier murmell n.
Scottish (now chiefly Orkney).
1. transitive. To complain of, bemoan; to lament over. In early use: †to mutter, mumble (obsolete).
