Etymology: < French muride (J. Anglada 1826, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 33 222, where Anglada comments on the circumstances of the origin of the name) < classical Latin muria brine (see muriatic adj.) + French -ide -ide suffix.
Chemistry. Obsolete.

1826 Lancet 4 Nov. 138/1 A new substance has been discovered by M. Balard..which he at first called muride.
1827 E. Turner Elem. Chem. 695 The name first applied to it by its discoverer [sc. A. J. Balard] is muride; but it has since been changed to brome..from the Greek βρῶμος signifying a strong or rank odour. This appellation may in the English language be properly converted into that of Bromine.
1844 R. D. Hoblyn Dict. Terms Med. & Collateral Sci. (ed. 2) Muride, the name first given to bromine, from its being an ingredient of sea-water.
