Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin murdrum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin murdrum (see murder n.1).
Now historical.
1. From the 11th to the 15th cent.: a fine imposed by the Crown on a manor or hundred in which a murder (i.e. the unlawful killing of an unknown by an unknown person) had been committed. Cf. murder n.1 4.

1769 W. Blackstone Common Laws of Eng. iv. xiv. 195 The name of murder [as a crime] was antiently applied only to the secret killing of another..for which the vill wherein it was committed, or (if that were too poor) the whole hundred was liable to a heavy amercement; which amercement itself was also denominated murdrum.
1909 Amer. Hist. Rev. 15 39 In the case of the murdrum.., it is customary to consider that because this fine was originally intended to hold communities responsible for order within their boundaries, therefore its enforcement harmed the feudal lords only in so far as it lessened the paying power of their tenants.
1962 H. R. Loyn Anglo-Saxon Eng. viii. 322 The institution of the murdrum fine by William I was of particular significance in making clear the distinction between French and English.
1997 Oxoniensia 61 298 He is said to have played a part in obtaining quittance for the bishopric of Coventry from liability for murdrum fines.
2. Murder. Obsolete.Apparently an isolated use.
