Origin: A borrowing from Marathi. Etymon: Marathi Mumbaīkar.
Etymology: < Marathi Mumbaīkar < the name of Mumbaī Mumbai (formerly Bombay: see Bombay n.), the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra + eastern Hindi -kar genitive suffix, often used to form surnames from place names.The word was apparently popularized in English when the Marathi form of the place name was made the official name of the city in 1995. Attested earlier in English contexts as a surname:1877 S. M. Nayak Hist. Pattana Prabhus 63 The Prabhus in addition to their military surnames were popularly known as Mumbaikar, Chaulkar..&c. from the respective seats of their families.
A native or inhabitant of Mumbai.
