Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Mulciber , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Mulciber, an epithet of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metalworking, considered by ancient etymologists to be a derivative of mulcēre to touch gently, soothe (see mulcify v.), on the grounds that Vulcan softened or worked the metal + -ian suffix. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mɒlsibīə·riăn) /mʌlsɪˈbɪərɪən/.
Obsolete.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of Vulcan; resembling Vulcan.
