1. An MPEG standard and file format for the compression and encoding of digital audio sequences, used widely on the internet for the purpose of downloading and exchanging music, and in the playback of music on digital audio players. Cf. MPEG n.Recorded earliest in attributive use.MP3 is the most complex of three layers of the MPEG-1 standard and involves limiting bandwidth and exploiting perceptual effects to compress audio into relatively small-sized but high-fidelity files.
