Etymology: < Middle French, French naissant (17th cent. in sense 2; only attested from 1581 in sense 1), use as adjective of present participle of naître to be born (late 10th cent. in Old French as naistre , nestre ) < classical Latin nāscere (earliest in Cato; more usually in classical Latin deponent nāscī : see nascent adj.); compare -ant suffix1. Compare later nascent adj.
1. Heraldry. Of a charge, esp. an animal: issuing from the middle of a fess or other ordinary. Frequently as postmodifier.
