ΚΠ
1976 M. N. Baily in Brookings Papers Econ. Activity III. 586 The unemployment rate will exceed for a period the rate sometimes called ‘natural’, but more appropriately called the nonaccelerating-inflation rate of unemployment (NAIRU) since this rate is neither ‘natural’ nor optimal.
1989 Fortune 19 June 88/1 When inflation began to speed up last year, most economists thought Nairu was around 6% or even 7%.
1995 Economist 4 Feb. 27/1 The danger of complacently assuming that the NAIRU has fallen is that, once it is breached, pay rises will start to rise far more rapidly than expected, pushing up firm's unit costs, and thus inflation.
This is a new entry (OED Third Edition, June 2003; most recently modified version published online March 2022).
