Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi nainsukh.
Etymology: < Hindi nainsukh, lit. ‘eyes' delight’ < nain eye + sukh pleasure. Compare French nansouk, nansouck, nanzouk (1829 as nansouck; 1771 as manzouque).Perhaps after Urdu tansukh, apparently a calque on Persian tan-āsānī body-comfort; compare:1851 Descriptive & Hist. Acct. Cotton Manuf. Dacca 46 Nyansook is a thick muslin, apparently identical with the fabric called tunsook..in the Ayeen Akbery.
Originally and chiefly North American. Now chiefly historical.
