单词 myrrhophore
释义

myrrhophoren.

Brit. /ˈməːrəfɔː/, U.S. /ˈmərəˌfɔr/
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μυροϕόρος.
Etymology: Probably < Byzantine Greek μυροϕόρος bearing unguents ( < ancient Greek μύρον unguent, perfume (see myronic adj.) + -ϕόρος -phore comb. form), although apparently (as indicated by the spelling) misapprehended as < ancient Greek μύρρα myrrh n.1 + -ϕόρος -phore comb. form (compare especially quot. 19741). The Greek word does not occur in the Greek New Testament at Mark 16:1. N.E.D. (1908) also gives the pronunciation (mi·rō-) /ˈmɪrə-/ for the first element.
Art.
Each of the women, usually three in number, traditionally represented in art as carrying spices to the sepulchre of Christ (see Mark 16:1).
