Forms: 1500s– myrica, 1700s myrice.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin myrīcē, myrīca; Greek μυρίκη.
Etymology: < classical Latin myrīcē, also myrīca tamarisk or its etymon ancient Greek μυρίκη; further etymology uncertain, but probably a loanword, perhaps ultimately cognate with tamarisk n. Compare Middle French, French myrique (second half of the 16th cent.).
