Etymology: < Munchkin, the name of a member of a race of small, childlike creatures who help Dorothy in her quest for the city of Oz in the children's fantasy The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), by L. Frank Baum (1856–1919), U.S. writer, probably after munch v. and -kin suffix.For examples of Baum’s use of the word compare:1900 L. F.
