释义 | mumpern. Chiefly slang and English regional. A beggar, a mendicant; a person who sponges on others.Grose in his Classical Dict. Vulgar Tongue (1796) states that the term denoted ‘originally beggars of the genteel kind, but since used for beggars in general.’ Eng. Dial. Dict. at Mump v.1 records that in some parts of England the term is ‘not applied to beggars in general, but to those only who go in troops from house to house, in some places on St Thomas's Day, in others on St Stephen's’ (see also the note at mumping n.2). The sense in quot. a1652 is unclear.
