Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: multi- comb. form, tuberculate adj.
Etymology: < multi- comb. form + tuberculate adj.; in sense B. after scientific Latin Multituberculata, order name (E. D. Cope 1884, in Amer. Naturalist 18 687). Compare earlier quadrituberculate adj. at quadri- comb. form 1, quinquetuberculate adj. at quinque- comb. form , trituberculate adj., unituberculate adj. at uni- comb. form 1a, and slightly earlier multituberculated adj.

Of a tooth: bearing several cusps arranged in two or three rows. Also: of, relating to, or characteristic of the extinct order Multituberculata of rodent-like mammals.

1884 E. D. Cope in Amer. Naturalist 18 687 The extinct marsupials belong to three types, as distinguished by the form of their superior molar teeth. These are trituberculate, quadrituberculate, or multituberculate.
