Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit mudrā.
Etymology: < Sanskrit mudrā seal, stamp, signet ring, token, mode of holding the fingers in religious worship, cognate with Middle Persian, Persian muhr seal, signet ring (see mohur n.). O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives only the pronunciation (mɒdrā·) /mʌˈdrɑː/.
A symbolic movement of the hand and fingers of the kind used in Hindu ceremonies and statuary, Buddhist religious practice, and Indian dance. Also: such a movement or pose used in yoga, meditation, etc.
