Etymology: < mud n.1 + guard n.
1. A curved strip or cover made of metal, plastic, etc., and fitted over or around the wheel of a vehicle (esp. a bicycle or motorcycle), to protect the vehicle and rider or riders from water and dirt thrown up from the ground. In early use occasionally more generally: any guard fitted to a vehicle for this purpose.
