Forms: 1800s–1900s bacha, 1800s–1900s butcha, 1800s– bachcha, 1800s– bucha, 1900s– baccha, 1900s– buchcha.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu bačča; Persian bačča.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu bačča, baččā child, calf, and its etymon (ii) Persian bačča child, cub (Middle Persian waččag child, cub, ultimately < an Iranian base with the sense ‘so much’, (and hence) ‘so small’, ‘so great’).
Indian English.
A child. Also: a young animal.
