Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman and Middle French muniment document (c1170 in Old French; also in forms minument (14th cent.), mynument (1480), munument (1519)), defence, protection (1530: see sense 3; 1270 in Old French in sense ‘act of protecting, provisioning’), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin mūnīmentum fortification, defence, in post-classical Latin also document, title deed, charter (11th cent.; 9th cent. as monimentum ; from 1130 in British sources) < mūnīre to fortify (see munite v.) + -mentum -ment suffix. Compare slightly earlier monument n. 3, and also munition n., munity n.1With sense 2 compare French munir ‘to furnish (with)’ (see munish v.).
