Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit muni.
Etymology: < Sanskrit muni, lit. ‘silent’, cognate with Armenian mownǰ dumb, ancient Greek μυνδός dumb, and perhaps with forms in various Slavonic languages, e.g. Polish munia sluggard, fool, taciturn person.
Hinduism and Jainism.
An inspired or holy man; a sage; an ascetic, a hermit. Also used as an honorific title.
