单词 mountainer
释义

mountainern.

Brit. /ˈmaʊntᵻnə/, U.S. /ˈmaʊntənər/, /ˈmaʊntn̩ər/
Forms: see mountain n. and adj. and -er suffix1.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mountain n., -er suffix1.
Etymology: < mountain n. + -er suffix1. Compare later mountaineer n.In sense 1 with reference to the first element of the name of the French town of Montpellier. In sense 3 after French Montagnés (1603 in S. de Champlain Des Sauvages, which is probably the source of the reference in quot. 1625 at sense 3). Compare later Montagnais n. and adj., mountaineer n. 2. In sense 4 after post-classical Latin Montenses (lit. mountain people), a local name for the Donatists in Rome (4th cent.). ‘In the early list of heresies which goes by the name of St Jerome it is said that the Montenses were found chiefly at Rome, and that they were so named because they had concealed themselves in the hill-country during a time of persecution’ (J. H. Blunt Dict. Sects (1874) 341/1).
