A chronic disease of the central nervous system characterized by patchy demyelination and gliosis (sclerosis) resulting in visual, sensory, and motor symptoms that may include impaired speech, poor muscular coordination, and severe fatigue, typically beginning in young adulthood and following a relapsing and remitting course with increasing residual disability. Also called disseminated sclerosis.
