Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: multiple adj., myeloma n.
Etymology: < multiple adj. + myeloma n., after German multiples Myelom (J. von Rustizky 1873, in Deutsch. Zeitschr. f. Chirurgie 3 163).The best-known description is by O. Kahler (in Prager Med. Wochenschr. 14 33), on the basis of which the condition came to be known as Kahler's disease.
Medicine.
A malignant clonal proliferation of plasma cells, typically causing multiple lytic tumours in bones and usually associated with the presence of abnormal proteins in the blood and urine. Also called myelomatosis.
