Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mountain n., hare n.
Etymology: < mountain n. + hare n. In sense 1 after South African Dutch berghaas ( < berg mountain (see barrow n.1) + haas hare (see hare n.).
1. South African. The springhare, Pedetes capensis. Obsolete. rare.

A northern hare, Lepus timidus, whose coat is greyish-brown in summer and more or less white in winter, found mainly in the tundra and boreal forest regions of Eurasia, and (according to some authorities) the tundra region of North America. Also called Arctic hare, blue hare, Irish hare, varying hare.This species is found widely in Scotland and is the only hare native to Ireland. The American form is sometimes regarded as a separate species, L. arcticus.
