单词 motilon
释义

Motilonn.adj.

Brit. /məʊtᵻˈləʊn/, U.S. /ˌmoʊdəˈloʊn/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Motilones Brit. /məʊtᵻˈləʊneɪs/, U.S. /ˌmoʊdəˈloʊneɪs/.
Forms: 1900s– Motilon, 1900s– Motilón, 1900s– Motilone, 1900s– Motilones (adjective).
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish motilón.
Etymology: < Spanish motilón, lit. ‘shaven-headed one’ (1627 in sense A. 1; 1552 in sense ‘tonsured lay friar’) < motilar to cut the hair, Aragonese variant of mutilar to mutilate (1553) < classical Latin mutilāre mutilate v. + -ón -oon suffix. The term was originally applied by Spanish conquistadors to certain peoples living in and around the northern tip of the Andes on account of their custom of shaving their hair at the back and sides and leaving only the top to grow. Shaving continued to be practised among Motilon men, women, and children in the late 20th cent., and would sometimes include eyebrows or eyelashes in addition to taking the hair down to the scalp (S. Beckerman, personal communication). The plural form Motilones is probably an adoption of the Spanish plural form rather than a pluralizing of English Motilone.
