The suffix was very common in Old English, as in gyrdels (in Epinal Glossary gyrdisl, -ils) girdle, byrgels (buriels n.) tomb, græfels quarry, ríecels (rechels n.) incense, rǽdels riddle n.1 The few words of this type that have survived into modern English have lost their final s, owing to the original forms having been mistaken for plurals: see -le suffix.
