Etymology: < modern Hebrew mōsāḏ institution (in biblical Hebrew ‘foundation, base’). In sense 1 short for Hebrew Mōsāḏ (lĕ-)ʿAliyyāh Bēṯ Institution for the Second Immigration, and in sense 2 short for Hebrew Mōsāḏ ʿElyōn lĕ-Mōḏīʿīn ū-Ḇiṭāḥōn Supreme Institution for Intelligence and Security.
1. An underground organization formed in 1938 for the purpose of bringing Jews from Europe to Palestine. Now historical.
