Etymology: < scientific Latin Mormyridae, family name (A. Günther Catal. Fishes (1866) VI. 214) < mormyrus mormyrus n. + -idae (see -id suffix3).

Any of various thick-bodied freshwater fishes of the African family Mormyridae, many of which possess electric organs and some of which have an elongated snout resembling an elephant's trunk.
