1886 U.S. Consular Rep. No. 70. 319 Amongst the jasper pebbles are some of pale mottled tints of yellow, pink, drab,..&c. These are termed morlops by the miners.
1895 I. K. Funk et al. Standard Dict. Eng. Lang. II. 1151/1 Morlop, a mottled jasper pebble found in New South Wales, and much sought for by miners, as it usually occurs with diamonds.
1927–9 H. Wheeler Waverley Children's Dict. V. 2836/2 Among the jasper pebbles found by the miners are some of pale mottled tints... These are termed morlops by the miners, who say they always find diamonds with them.
