Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Morgagnianus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Morgagnianus (in cataracta Morgagniana , G. J. Beer Lehre von den Augenkrankheiten (1813) II. 291) < the name of Morgagni (see Morgagni n.) + -anus -an suffix. Compare German Morgagnische Staar (Beer 1813, as above).

Ophthalmology.

Designating, relating to, or associated with a type of hypermature cataract in which the nucleus of the lens sinks into the liquefied cortex.

Eye xi. 217 In lenses which have become opaque, either from disease or injury, the softening process will sometimes slowly go on until nearly the whole mass is converted into a fluid state. It was to the early stage of this process that the term ‘Morgagnian Cataract’ was formerly applied.
