(a) A bank or mound of earth on a moor; a heap or mass of peat. (b) A bank of earth on which moss grows.Since banks of peat are formed on moorland by the growth of moss plants, the senses are frequently indistinguishable, though some instances may be clearly assignable: e.g. quots. 1799, 1926 to sense (a), and quots. 1742, 1881 to sense b.
