单词 moskin
释义

moskinadj.

Brit. /ˈmɒskᵻn/, U.S. /ˈmɔskən/, /ˈmɑskən/, Scottish English /ˈmɔskən/
Forms: pre-1700 muscane, pre-1700 muskan, pre-1700 (2000s literary) muskane, 1900s– mooskin, 1900s– mosken, 1900s– moskin, 1900s– musken.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly either (i) borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Or (ii) a borrowing from early Scandinavian. Partly a borrowing from Norn. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic mosgain.
Etymology: In early use either < Scottish Gaelic mosgain rotten, mouldy (compare Irish múscán mould), or the reflex of a borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Icelandic moskinn (17th cent.), Norwegian regional mosken , mausken , møysken , Swedish regional musken , Danish regional musken , all in sense ‘decayed, rotten, mouldy’ ( < the Scandinavian base of Danish regional musk (see mosker v.) + the Scandinavian base of Danish regional -en -en suffix6). In later (Shetland) use < the unattested Norn reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by the Scandinavian forms listed above. In the following quot. (based on the passage in quot. 1531) the word has apparently been misapprehended as the name of a kind of wood:1606 W. Warner Continuance Albions Eng. xiv. xc. 366 A club of Muscane in one hand,..For naturally that wood in darke giues Shine.
Scottish (now chiefly Shetland).
Decayed, rotten, musty. Sc. National Dict. (1965) records the word as still in use in Shetland in 1963.In quot. 2015 perhaps reintroduced from an early source, as quot. a1600.
