Etymology: < mashkn-, stem of Yiddish mashknen to pawn ( < mashkn pledge < Hebrew maškōn pledge) + -eer suffix1 (or -er suffix1). Compare Hebrew miškēn to pawn. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mǫskĕnīə·ɹ) /mɒskəˈnɪə(r)/.
