Etymology: < classical Latin mordicant-, mordicāns, present participle (used as adjective by medical writers from the 5th cent.) of mordicāre (see mordicate v.). Compare Middle French mordicant caustic, irritant (1539; one isolated attestation in 1314 in Old French in a medical context). Compare mordicative adj., mordificative adj. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mǭ·ɹdikănt) /ˈmɔːdɪkənt/.
